Description
 

The same characteristics are important for bowed lutes as for plucked lutes, except the manner in which they are played. Bowed lutes are primarily played with a bow.

 
Examples:

Viols (fretted neck), fiddles, violins, viola, cello, double bass, and hurdy-gurdy (no frets)
