March 20, 2002 Masbate Schools Division Superintendent Isagani A. Delavin accepted the first copy of the Masbatenyo Dictionary for the more than 600,000 people of Masbate province in the Central Philippines. With the assistance of Miriam V. Barlet and Felixberto V. Granado Jr. and many others, Dr. Elmer Wolfenden of the SIL compiled this 736-page volume over a period of 30 years. This dictionary of 6,000 entries was collected to assist the researcher in learning Masbatenyo. It was compiled from texts gathered during Dr. Wolfenden research and was checked by mother tongue speakers. As well as the main body of the dictionary, it includes phonological and grammatical sketches of the language and an English index.

It was beautiful to see the teachers from the various schools and colleges throughout the province gathering to buy copies for their schools. The Mayor of the City was excited for this contribution to the heritage of the area. This was the culmination of the dreams of numerous people who have made word lists over the years. The people of Masbate now have a book that corroborates the authenticity of their heart language.
