Aaron, Marianne

Abbot, Elinor

Elinor Abbot is an International Anthropology Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (Dallas, TX). In this position, she has worked in SIL training and workshop programs in Mexico, Guatemala, Africa, North America, and England. Prior to working with SIL she taught anthropology at the University of New Hampshire. She received a Ph.D. in anthropology from Brandeis University in 1990.

Anderson, Judi Lynn

Judi Lynn Anderson has worked with SIL as a linguist for the Comaltepec Chinanteco language of Mexico. She received her B.A. from Washington State University in 1961, and linguistic training from SIL in Seattle in 1966-1967.

Ansre, Gilbert

Gilbert Ansre has been a regional translation consultant for the United Bible societies in Togo and Ghana. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from London University.

Barnwell, Katharine

Katy Barnwell has served with SIL since 1963 in Ghana, Nigeria, and in International Administration. She received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from University College, London, in 1969.

Beekman, Elaine

Elaine Beekman joined SIL in 1947, and has served as a linguist/translator for the Chol language in Mexico. She received linguistic training from SIL in Norman, OK in 1947.

Bendor-Samuel, David

David Bendor-Samuel is the Summer Institute of Linguistic's Vice President of Wycliffe Organizations. Prior to taking this position, he has served as SIL Vice President of Academic Affairs, International Literacy Coordinator, and Director of Wycliffe United Kingdom, and has taught various linguistic and applied linguistic (literacy and sociolinguistic) courses for SIL at various universities. He has done fieldwork in the Guajajara language in Brazil. Bendor-Samuel received a Ph.D. in Linguistics from London University in 1966.

Bendor-Samuel, Margaret

Margaret Bendor-Samuel is the Summer Institute of Linguistic's Assistant Vice President for Wycliffe Organizations. Prior to this position, she began the Sociolinguistics Department for SIL, served as an international literacy consultant, and has taught various applied linguistic (literacy and sociolinguistic) courses with SIL. She did fieldwork in Brazil in the Guajajara language. Bendor-Samuel has a Teacher's Certificate and a Diploma in Theology from London University.

Bergman, Ted G.

Ted G. Bergman is the International Survey Coordinator. Prior to joining SIL, he worked as an optical physicist with the U.S. Navy. He received a Ph.D. in Physics from Colorado State University in 1970.

Bhola, H. S.

H. S. Bhola is currently Professor of Education in the School of Education at Indiana Univeristy where he specializes in policy studies in adult education. Prior to this, Bhola worked in the UNESCO-sponsored Experimental World Literacy Program in Tanzania and various countries in southern Africa. He has a passionate commitment to adult education believing that literacy is both a right and a necessity in today's world. This passion is manifest in his extensive and widely-read writings, a number of which have been contracted by UNESCO. In addition to his writing, Dr. Bhola has travelled widely and is frequently sought as a consultant to national Ministries of Education.

Black, Cheryl A.

Cheryl Black is a Linguistic Consultant with the Mexico branch of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She has worked on several Zapotec grammars and taught syntax many times at the University of North Dakota. She received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1994. Her major area was syntactic theory.

Black, H. Andrew

H. Andrew Black is a Linguistic Consultant with respect to CARLA (Computer Assisted Related Language Adaptation) with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He is also the CARLA Coordinator for the Mexico branch of SIL and has taught many CARLA-related courses and workshops. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1993. His major area was phonological theory.

Blair, Frank

Frank D. Blair is currently completing his Ph.D. dissertation in Linguistics with a concentration in Sociolinguistics at Georgetown University. He has served as a language survey specialist in South Asia. He received an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1982.

Boothe, Ken

Ken Boothe is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Texas at Arlington and the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Prior to taking this position, he did fieldwork with SIL in Nigeria (1989-1991) and Ethiopia (1992-1994) as a literacy specialist and consultant . Boothe received an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1987.

Brown, Gay

Gay Brown is Director of Personnel Information with Wycliffe Australia. She did fieldwork in Papua New Guinea as a literacy team from 1970-1990, was a literacy consultant, and then served as Literacy Coordinator for seven years. Gay gained a Trained Infant Teachers Certificate from Toorak Teachers College in 1960.

Brush, Beaumont

Beaumont Brush is a Member-in-Training with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He received his MA in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1996 and is working toward a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science-Linguistics at SUNY Buffalo.

Burquest, Donald A.

Donald Burquest is Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Texas at Arlington and an International Linguistic Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He did fieldwork in Nigeria on the Ngas language and was involved in a language project completed in 1977. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from UCLA in 1973.

Casad, Eugene H.

Eugene H. Casad is head of the Language Survey and Identification Committee for the Mexico Branch of SIL, along with being a consultant for various linguistic and survey related projects. Prior to taking this position he did field work with SIL in Mexico. He received a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, San Diego in 1982.

Chadbourne, Karen

Karen Chadbourne lived in Russia in 1983 and 1984 as a nanny for an American family.

Colburn, David

David Colborn is currently developing online and printed helps for Lingualinks. He has been working with SIL since 1997 after working as a technical communicator in industry for 15 years. David received a BA in music from California State University, Los Angeles in 1968 and has completed numerous courses in the field of technical communication.

Coward, David F.

David Coward is serving as a Language and Community Development facilitator with the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Selaru, Maluku, Indonesia. His career with that organization began in 1982 and his field assignment to Indonesia began in 1986. He received a Masters degree in Linguistics from UT Arlington, TX in 1990.

Curtis, Lynn R.

Lynn R. Curtis, Ph.D., is Director of International Program Development, Laubach Literacy International.

Davis, Patricia M.

Patricia M. Davis is an international literacy consultant and Professor of Applied Linguistics with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (1985-present). Prior to this assignment, she did fieldwork with SIL in Peru (1964-1984) and also worked as a literacy consultant and literacy coordinator. She specialized in planning, teacher training, and materials preparation for bilingual school programs. Davis received a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Texas at Austin in 1995.

Dawson, Barbara Jean

Jean Dawson is a literacy consultant and does field work for the Summer Institute of Linguistics in the Mainland Southeast Asia Group. Prior to this assignment, she did fieldwork and literacy consulting with SIL in the Philippines and in Indonesia. She served as an international literacy consultant to the Asia Area. She received an M.A. from New York Theological Seminary in 1953.

Day, Dwight H. Jr.

Dwight Day served as editor in the International Linguistics Department of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He received an M. A. from the University of Virginia in 1967 and a second M. A. in Biblical Studies from St. Joseph College in Connecticut in 1973. Deceased 1996.

Decker, Ken

Ken Decker is currently doing language research and development work in Belize with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He has also served on the SIL South Asia Survey Team in Pakistan. He holds his M.A. in Linguistics from University of Texas at Arlington.

Diehl, Lon

Lon Diehl has worked as a linguist in Asia. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from Indiana University in 1981.

Diehl, Louise

Louise Diehl has worked as a linguist in Asia. She received her Masters of Music from Johns Hopkins University in 1973, and linguistics training at the University of North Dakota in 1974-75.

Dooley, Robert A.

Robert A. Dooley is a field linguist with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, and is on the adjunct summer faculty of the University of North Dakota. He has done fieldwork with the Mbya Guarani (Tupi) of Brazil since 1975, and served as Director of SIL at UND and also as International Coordinator of Academic Training. He received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Oklahoma State University in 1974.

Dyson, A. H. (Bert)

Bert Dyson earned his Doctor of Education degree at the University of Georgia in the field of Adult Education. He founded the Department of Adult Education, Nigerian Baptist Convention and served as its director for 18 years. Though an emeritus missionary, he returns to Africa to lead training conferences for literacy leaders. Annually he trains overseas literacy workers at Literacy & Evangelism, International. To help literacy workers overseas keep abreast of current literacy trends and technology, he edits a newsletter for literacy workers in Africa.

Early, Robert

Robert Early has been a linguist with the Vanuatu Group of the Summer Institute of Linguistics since 1982. He has also carried out survey projects in Cook Islands and Solomon Islands. He has an M.A. in linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Echerd, Stephen M.

Steve Echerd has done language field work with minority and endangered language groups in Mexico, Peru, Honduras, and Guatemala. His research interests are in the areas of language learning, dialect geography, semantics and lexicography, and in developing computational aids for teaching and doing linguistic field work, language analysis, and academic publishing. He has years of experience as a teacher, consultant, project manager, researcher, and administrator. He completed an MA in linguistics at the University of Texas at Arlington in 1977.

Foote, Ilene

Ilene Foote is part of SIL's International Administration. Prior to taking this assignment, she served as a literacy specialist for the Munukutuba language of the People's Republic of the Congo. She received an M.A. in English from the University of Nebraska in 1974.

Fritzell, Lisbeth

Lisbeth Fritzell joined SIL in 1985, and has served as a translator for the Duke of York language of Papua New Guinea. She received training from the Nordic Bible Institute in Sweden.

Gallemore, Doris

Doris Gallemore was an elementary education teacher for 40 years. She is presently teaching English as a Second Language in China.

Gittlen, Laura

Laura Gittlen has worked with SIL as a translator for the Northern Tlaxiaco Mixtec language of Mexico.

Grimes, Barbara D.

Barbara Dix Grimes is Coordinator for Cross-Cultural Communication at the Centre for Regional Studies, Artha Wacana Christian University, Kupang, Timor, Indonesia. She grew up in Brazil. Since arriving in Indonesia in 1981, she has developed a comparative focus on the cultures and sociolinguistics of societies in eastern Indonesia. Her most in-depth work has been on the Buru people of central Maluku. She received her Ph.D. in anthropology from the Australian National University in Canberra in 1995.

Grimes, Barbara F.

Barbara F. Grimes has been the Editor of the Ethnologue and companion volumes since 1971 and is currently assigned to the SIL Hawaii Pidgin language project. Prior to being Editor, she assisted with the 1954, 1965, and 1969 editions of the Ethnologue, did field work with SIL in Mexico (1952-1969), and taught SIL courses for 27 summers. She holds a Doctorate in Literature from Wheaton College.

Grimes, Charles E.

Charles E. Grimes is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Regional Studies, Artha Wacana Christian University, Kupang, Timor, Indonesia. He was born and raised in Mexico among the Huichol. His focus since beginning fieldwork in Indonesia in 1981 has been on descriptive and comparative studies of the Austronesian and Papuan languages of eastern Indonesia. He has also done additional work on Malay-based creoles and endangered vernacular languages in the region. His most in-depth work has been on the Buru language of central Maluku. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Australian National University in Canberra in 1992.

Grimes, Joseph E.

Joseph E. Grimes is an International Linguistics Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, and is assigned to the SIL Hawaii Pidgin language project. He is also Consulting Editor for the Ethnologue and companion volumes and Professor Emeritus of Linguistics, Cornell University. He did field work with SIL in Mexico (1952-1969) and has conducted SIL field workshops in Africa, Asia, South America, and the Pacific. He received a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Cornell University in 1960 and holds a Doctorate in Literature from Wheaton College.

Gudschinsky, Sarah C.

Sarah Gudschinsky (1919-1974) was a researcher, innovator, and scholar in the specialized field of introducing literacy to preliterate societies. As a member of SIL, she worked with the Mazatec people of Mexico. She worked as a linguistic and literacy consultant as well as serving SIL as International Literacy Coordinator. She developed a reading approach that has since been named for her.

Gustafsson, Uwe

Uwe Gustafsson has been doing fieldwork with the Summer Institute of Linguistics in South Asia for 25 years.

Hall, Sue

Sue Hall is a Member In Training with Wycliffe UK, heading for an ethnomusicology assignment in Senegal. She was a member of the pioneer Special Assignment Literacy Team (SALT) in Ghana 1995-1997 and was active in Scripture Use activities (including music) with a number of language groups. She holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of Dundee, UK (1995) and is currently pursuing studies in ethnomusicology and French.

Halvorson, Marian A.

Marion A. Halvorson has been involved in adult basic and continuing education programs for 40 years, mostly in Africa.

Hatfield, Deborah H.

Deborah Hatfield is the Survey Coordinator of the Togo/Benin Branch of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She has done field surveys in Cameroon, Togo, Benin and Ghana since 1990 and has regularly taught an SIL survey course. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Georgetown University.

Hayashi, Larry

Larry Hayashi is the Task Automation Coordinator of the Linguistics Department of SIL International. He worked for one year in Cameroon. He has assisted in teaching both linguistics and linguistic software training courses at Texas SIL, Canada Institute of Linguistics, and Oregon SIL. He received his MA in Linguistics from the University of Oregon in 1991.

Healey, Alan

In 1955 Alan Healey joined the field staff of the Summer Institute of Linguistics in the Philippines where he studied the Agta language. In 1959 he transferred to Papua New Guinea where he worked with the Telefol language for 10 years. During this time he completed a Ph.D. in linguistics at the Australian National University. From 1969 to 1974 he headed the Technical Studies Department of SIL's PNG branch, after which he took up a position with SIL's training program in Australia.

Hein, Vern

Vern Hein has been a linguist with the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Zaire. He received an M.A. in linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1985.

Henne, Marilyn G.

Marilyn G. Henne is the International Communications Coordinator for the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She has been involved in both language programs and administration in the Guatemala Branch of SIL. She has an MA in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Hiebert, Paul G.

Paul G. Hiebert is Professor of Missionary Anthropology and South Asian Studies at the School of World Mission, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California. He was a Mennonite missionary in India, 1960-1965.

Hill, Margaret

Margaret V. Hill is currently assigned to Zaire with SIL. Prior to this she worked in Nigeria. She received an M.A. in Education from the University of Manchester, England in 1978.

Hohulin, Lou

Lou Hohulin is a consultant in the International Linguistics Department of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She did fieldwork in the Philippines from 1962-1993 on two languages, Keley-i Kallahan and Tuwali Ifugao, and is continuing work on those language projects. She has served as the Associate Director of Academic Affairs in the Philippines and as the International Linguistics Coordinator. She received her MA in Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1976.

Hollingsworth, Kenneth R.

Kenneth Hollingsworth is a linguist/translator with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He has researched the language and music of the Mofu-Gudur people of Northern Cameroon since 1978. He received his MA in Linguistics in 1976 from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Hunt, Trudi C.

Trudi C. Hunt is the editor of the literacy bibliography for LinguaLinks Literacy Workplace. Prior to this assignment, Trudi was a bookkeeper in Papua New Guinea (1979-1981) and in Cameroon (1989). She is presently waiting assignment to West Africa as a literacy specialist.

Hunter, Georgia G.

Georgia G. Hunter is a literacy consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Mexico. She has also done fieldwork and was a literacy coordinator there (1961-1980 and 1986-present). She has worked as a literacy consultant in the Philippines (1982-1986). Hunter received a B.S. from the University of Washington in 1957.

Huttar, George L.

George Huttar joined SIL in 1966. He has worked in International Administration, as a linguist for the Ndyuka (Aukaans) language of Surinam, and in West Africa. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Michigan in 1967.

Mary Huttar joined SIL in 1966. She has worked as a linguist for the Ndyuka (Aukaans) language of Surinam, and in West Africa, and also in International Administration. She received her M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1983.

Johnson, Merieta K.

Merieta K. Johnson is a Literacy Consultant with the International Literacy Office of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She did translation and literacy work from 1987 to 1992 with the Central America Branch of SIL, and from 1994 to 1996 with the Kenya Branch. She holds a Master's degree from Texas Woman's University and is currently doing dissertation research for a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Texas at Austin.

Johnston, Clay

Clay Johnston is managing editor for LinguaLinks. Since 1992 he has been involved in developing editorial standards for the product and writing manuals, multimedia segments, and training modules for LinguaLInks. Prior to his work on LinguaLinks, he did fieldwork among the Cotabato Manobo people in the Philippines, worked in public relations in the USA, and helped with documentation and training of specialized software for SIL fieldworkers. He has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech and a BD from Columbia International University.

Jones, Ted

Ted Jones has worked with SIL as a translator for the Guelavia Zapoteco language of Mexico. He received linguistic training from SIL in Seattle in 1971-72.

Jordan, Paul C.

Paul Jordan is a member of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He worked as a linguist/translator in Africa (in the Senegal-Gambia-Guinea Bissau Branch). He received a B. Sc. from the University of Florida in 1986.

Kindell, Gloria E.

Gloria E. Kindell is an International Sociolinguistics Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She has done field work with SIL in Brazil, as well as extensive teaching in Brazil, England, and the United States. She received a Ph.D. in Linguistics with a concentration in sociolinguistics from Georgetown University in 1982.

Klaassens, Anne

Anne Klaassens is doing fieldwork with the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Thailand (1989-present) as literacy consultant and coordinator. She has taught applied linguistic (literacy) courses with SIL in Singapore. Klaassens received an M.S. in Education at Indiana University in Bloomington. She is continuing work on a Ph.D. in Education at Indiana University .

Kutsch Lojenga, Constance

Constance Kutsch Lojenga is a linguistic and literacy consultant and does fieldwork (Ngiti language) with SIL in Eastern Zaire. She is also an international linguistic consultant . Prior to this position she did fieldwork in the Attie language project in Cote d'Ivoire (1975-1983) and in the Lyele language project in Burkina Faso. She has worked as a consultant in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique and Botswana. She worked as a consultant, guiding and training nationals in the Ngiti and Lendu language projects in Zaire. She received a Ph.D. in African Linguistics from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands.

Landweer, M. Lynn

Lynn Landweer is currently on loan to the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Texas from the Papua New Guinea Branch of SIL. She was the Coordinator of the Sociolinguistic Survey section of the Technical Studies department of that branch, carried out 11 surveys in PNG, and has taught survey courses at SIL in North America and Australia. She holds an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Lane, Martha A.

Martha A. Lane is a freelance Adult Literacy Consultant. She is presently developing a four book ESL (English as a Second Language) series for Literacy & Evangelism in Tulsa, OK. Prior to this she worked for 14 years as Coordinator of Lutheran Church Women's Volunteer Reading Aides Program in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Lane received an M.S. in Computer-Based Learning and Training from Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1989.

Lange, Marty P.

Marty P. Lange is a Vernacular Media Technician with Vernacular Media Services at JAARS. Prior to taking this position, he did field work with SIL in Papua New Guinea. He received a B.A. in Communications from Biola University in 1989.

Larson, Mildred L.

Mildred Larson joined SIL in 1950. She has served as a linguist for the Aguaruna language of Peru, and in International Administration. She received an M.A. in linguistics from the University of Michigan in 1958, and a Ph.D. in Humanities from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1977.

Lee, Ernest W.

Ernest W. Lee is a translation and linguistic consultant for the Summer Institute of Linguistics in the Solomon Islands. Prior to this assignment, he did fieldwork in Vietnam and worked as a literacy professor, literacy consultant and international literacy consultant for SIL. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics.

Levinsohn, Stephen H.

Stephen Levinsohn is an International Linguistics Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He did fieldwork in Colombia from 1968 to 1998 with the Inga (Quechuan) people, and currently directs linguistic and "Discourse for Translation" workshops in different parts of West Africa and Latin America. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistic Science from the University of Reading (England) in 1980.

Lewis, M. Paul

M. Paul Lewis is the International Sociolinguistics Coordinator of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He worked from 1975 (from 1982 with SIL) until 1996 doing language-related research, sociolinguistic survey, university teaching, and administration in Guatemala. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics with a concentration in sociolinguistics from Georgetown University in 1994.

Litteral, Robert L.

Robert Litteral has been a Linguistics Consultant with the Papua New Guinea Branch of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Loos, Eugene E.

Eugene Loos is an International Linguistic Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He did field work in Peru from 1954 to 1984 on Capanahua (Panoan). He has served as the International Linguistics Coordinator. He received his Ph. D. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1967.

Louw, Johannes P.

He was the Senior Lecturer in Bantu Languages at the University of South Africa, and later became the Chairman of the Department of Greek at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He has lectured and written various articles on Bible translation. Two of his many published works are: "Semantics of New Testament Greek" and "A Handbook of the Zulu Language".

Loveland, Nancy J.

Nancy J. Loveland is a literacy specialist and consultant doing fieldwork in the Peruvian Highlands (1983 - present). She taught applied linguistics (Principles of Literacy) with SIL at the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Oregon. Prior to this assignment, she taught in public schools for nine years in Wisconsin. Loveland has an M.A. in Education from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.

Loving, Aretta

Aretta Loving was a translator and translation consultant in Papua New Guinea from 1959-1986. She served as an editor and trainer under the Kenyan NBTO from 1987-1993. She received a BA in education from Biola in southern California.

Loving, Richard E.

Ed Loving is supervisor of Academic Personnel at the JAARS Center, Waxhaw, NC. In Papua New Guinea he was a translator, administrator, and translation consultant from 1959-1986 and from 1994-1997. In Kenya, Africa he served as an administrator under the NBTO from 1987-1993. He received an MA in Missiology from Fuller Seminar in 1985.

Lunsford, Erin

Erin Lunsford received an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Oregon in 1995. She lived in Russia for six months during graduate school. She has assisted in indexing and developing online helps for the Linguistics and Language Learning workshops of LinguaLinks.

Lyons, Greg

Greg Lyons has worked with SIL in administration in SouthEast Asia. He received his B.S. from the University of Illinois in 1976, and joined SIL in 1982.

Lyons, Melinda

Melinda Lyons has worked with SIL as a librarian in SouthEast Asia. She joined SIL in 1981 and received her M.A. in Library Science from North Texas State University in 1983.
