533 Music subcategories

Description

Music can be studied in two common ways:

  • In a general way as a phenomenon within a culture consisting of such things as musical events, musical training, music specialists, and musical organizations
  • In a technical way as an independent system with components such as musical form and structure, rhythm, melody, and texture

Most researchers will find the general categories adequate for classifying cultural observations and lexical entries. Those with special interest in ethnomusicology will find the technical categories helpful.

The following groups of OCM subcategories represent topics you may want to explore. The subcategories are differentiated by mnemonic letters.

Example:

533e: Events/occasions for music

533o: Musical organisations
